Chiang Mai's secondhand market: meetup areas, popular items, student and nomad cycles
Chiang Mai has three clearly different groups of buyers: students, local workers, and long-stay foreigners. They buy different things and move in and out at different times of year. This page explains who to sell to, where, and when.

Main meetup areas
- Old City and Nimmanhaemin: foreigners and remote workers; cafés with parking are the usual choice.
- Around Chiang Mai University and Suan Dok: the student market, where anything under about 1,000 baht moves fast.
- San Sai and Mae Jo: dorms and rental houses, ideal for small appliances and fans.
- Malls along the Super Highway: neutral ground that works for people coming from Hang Dong or Saraphi too.
The university calendar moves the whole market
Term start (June-July and November) is when fans, study desks, plastic wardrobes, bicycles and mattresses fetch their best prices, because students move into dorms at the same time.
At the end of term and before the summer break (March-April), those same items flood the market at once. Buyers should shop then; sellers should list two or three weeks ahead of the crowd.
Computers, monitors and office chairs are mostly bought by remote workers, who arrive from November to February — so those sell well in that window even outside term time.
Smoke season and handovers
From February to April Chiang Mai has heavy smoke haze. People go out less and outdoor meetups get cancelled, so arrange handovers inside malls or buildings and allow extra time.
The one category that sells better in that period is air purifiers, filter fans and replacement filters. If you have working equipment, state the filter model and how long it has been used — buyers compare models in detail.
Deliveries up the hills and between districts
Rental houses towards Mae Rim, Samoeng and Doi Saket often sit on narrow, sloping lanes. For bulky items, ask whether a pickup can reach the door and how many people will help carry.
For heavy goods, a local hired truck between districts is cheaper than a parcel service. Small items should go by normal parcel — and say in the listing whether the price includes shipping.
