Thailand's seasonal calendar for secondhand demand: Songkran, rainy season, school terms, and year-end

Thailand's secondhand market rises and falls with the calendar more predictably than most people realise. Knowing what sells when helps you price items and time listings better.

Before Songkran (March to early April)

Ahead of Songkran, Thai households traditionally clean out and declutter for the new year, making this one of the biggest listing surges of the year — clothes, furniture, and home décor especially. On the buying side, people look for floral shirts and waterproof gear like dry bags and waterproof bluetooth speakers, and prices on those items tend to climb right before the long holiday.

Rainy season (May to October)

Rain jackets, boots, and flood-prevention gear for ground-floor homes sell well during this stretch. Meanwhile, avoid meeting outdoors to inspect items like bicycles or wooden furniture that can be damaged by sudden downpours — always inspect under cover. If you're storing items to sell later, use moisture-absorbing packs or silica gel with electronics to prevent mould forming on circuit boards.

School term start (May and November)

Ahead of the May and November term starts, kids' items sell especially well — good-condition secondhand uniforms, backpacks, bicycles, and used textbooks. Parents look for savings since term-start costs add up fast. Sellers with these items should list 2-3 weeks ahead of term start so parents have time to browse and arrange pickup.

Year-end (November to December)

Year-end sees two opposite trends at once. Some people sell things off to fund holiday spending and travel, pushing more good-condition items onto the market at attractive prices. Others are hunting for secondhand gifts — cameras, watches, and party décor for New Year's celebrations. Both buying and selling activity peak together during this window.

Protecting goods from humidity and floods in storage

Store items on shelving raised at least 15-20cm off the floor, especially in ground-floor homes in flood-prone areas.
Use lidded plastic bins rather than cardboard for anything stored longer than a month.
Add silica gel to boxes holding electronics and cameras to prevent mould on lenses.
Photograph the item's condition before storing it, in case you need to compare later when selling.

Holiday delivery delays

During Songkran and New Year, most courier companies close for 3-5 days and backlogs build up before and after the holidays. Warn buyers to expect deliveries 3-7 days later than usual if shipped around these dates, and arrange an in-person handover instead of a parcel where possible for certainty and to reduce the risk of a package getting lost in an overloaded warehouse.
