Safe secondhand trading in Myanmar: common scams, meetup spots and checking mobile payments
Secondhand trading in Myanmar has long run through Facebook groups and word of mouth. That leaves few ways to check who you are dealing with and little record when a deal goes wrong. This guide collects what Near Dee users have actually run into and turns it into checks for before, during and after a trade.

1. Check the person before the item
Look at the other user's trust score, reviews, join date and past listings first. A brand-new account offering several phones or laptops well below market price is the most common scam pattern.
Near Dee verifies neighbourhoods by GPS, so it is hard for someone in another city to pose as a neighbour. If the meetup point is far from their verified area, ask why.
2. Scams seen most often in Myanmar
- Fake transfer screenshots: KBZPay and Wave Pay success screens are easy to edit. Confirm the deposit in your own app, not on their phone.
- Deposit-first requests: the chat moves to Viber or Telegram, a 'reservation deposit' is requested, then the seller disappears.
- Fake parcels to other cities: only a waybill photo is sent and the box is empty. Track the number with the courier yourself.
- Cash miscounts: when large amounts change hands in cash, count the bundles on the spot.
3. Where and when to meet
Daytime, busy places with security staff or CCTV are best. In Yangon, mall entrances, large supermarkets and bank branches are common meetup points.
Streets get dark quickly during power cuts, so avoid late-evening meetups. For electronics, meet near a café or shop where you can plug the device in.
4. Confirm payment, then hand over
With mobile payment, the seller should see the incoming notification and balance change in their own app before handing over the item. With cash, count it in front of each other and check large notes.
Keep every condition — price, accessories, place, time — in the Near Dee chat. It is the only record our team can review if there is a dispute.
5. If something goes wrong
- Report the account straight away and keep the chat history.
- If you paid by mobile wallet, contact the wallet's support with the transaction ID immediately.
- If the same account is still posting other items, mention that in your report.
