In Mandalay and most Myanmar cities, the motorbike is the most important everyday vehicle. Some areas, such as central Yangon, restrict riding, so think about where you will ride before you buy.

Papers and where you can ride
- Check the owner's name and chassis and engine numbers on the registration match the bike.
- Check the rules for the plate's region and where you will ride; motorbikes are restricted in central Yangon.
- Unregistered bikes may be cheap but bring enforcement and resale problems — be careful.
On-the-spot checks
- Starts promptly from cold and idles evenly
- White or black exhaust smoke, oil leaks
- Front and rear brakes, chain slack, sprocket wear
- Tyre date and cracks; headlight and indicators working
Flood damage and price
Bikes flooded in the rainy season may have corroded wiring and internal engine damage. Look for rust and mud under the seat and at wiring connectors.
